Worst….Local Government….Ever!!!

You know, I have seen some pretty piss-poor management at the local government level before, but I have to say that my beloved home county of Jefferson County, Alabama really takes the cake.  Check this out:

Yes, that’s 123 contracts that the county has no idea whether or not that they are even still valid and active or not.  Worth more than $45 million.  That’s assuming that the $89M contract is not a valid amount (and if it is, I have to get into the substance abuse testing business!).  Sad thing is, they have to assume it’s not correct, because they don’t know!  How the heck does this county conduct business?  Where in the world would contracts disappear off to?  It’s just mind-boggling to me.  But then again, this is the same brilliant  “leadership” that has the county in over $3 billion worth of debt for a sewer system that has the county on the brink of bankruptcy.  It will make Orange County’s bankruptcy look like chump change.

It’s OK, the city of Birmingham will save the day.  They just authorized spending for the long-talked about dome for our non-existent sports team.  Wonderful.  Next thing somebody is going to tell me is that the mayor wants to bring the Olympics to Birmingham.   What’s that?……He does?……He’s serious?…….He’s created a committee?…….They are actually spending money on this?……..Geez, that’s just freakin’ great.

Well folks, we have quite the competition here for worst local goverment.  Jefferson County has the lead right now, but Birmingham City is setting themselves up to make it a race.  Anyone else have any other possible entrants?

  1. Ben says:

Alabama has never been known for its collective intellect and integrity in government

Neil Young even wrote a song to sum it up; “Alabama, The devil fools with the best laid plan. Swing low Alabama. …. Your Cadillac has got a wheel in the ditch and a wheel on the track.”
