It’s Football Time In Tennessee!!!! (and everywhere else!)

It doesn’t get much better than the opening weekend of the college football season!  Your team hasn’t lost yet, so no expectations have been dashed.  Every fan still has hope that this year will be the year.  Just finished watching Lane Kiffin’s debut as the UT Vols head coach.  Even though it was just against Western Kentucky, it was still impressive.  A 63-7 beatdown over the Hilltoppers.  Keep in mind the Vols struggled against Northern Illinois and even lost to Wyoming last year.  So it was good to see the Vols take somebody, ANYBODY, to the woodshed.    Here’s my breakdown of the game (something I will probably do after each UT game):

The Good:

  • Dominate performance from the offensive line.  Racked up over 380 yards on the ground, with two UT backs going over 100 yards.
  • Jonathan Crompton.  Credit where credit is due, he looks improved.  Showed a nice touch on the ball.  Appeared to actually be going through his progressions instead of predetermining where he was going with the football.  If UT can get some production from the QB position, this could be a good offense this year.
  • The defense in general.  Held WKU’s offense to less than 100 total yards.  I thought Rico McCoy had a particularly good game.
  • Finishing a team off.  UT had been so bad in recent years about letting a team that they had down off the hook.  It was good to see them actually go for the jugular for once!  The team was still giving a great effort in the 4th quarter even though the outcome was no longer in doubt.
  • Freshmen – Good production from true freshman.  Bryce Brown had over 100 yards rushing, Oku scored twice.  Good production and a TD from Marsalis Teague at the WR position.  The future is looking bright.
  • Expectations.  Kiffin was not happy with being up 28-0 at halftime.  Thought it should have been more.  Brown broke a long run.  His reward was getting chewed out on the sideline by the RB coach.  The coaches were right.  UT should have been by more than 28.  Brown deserved to get chewed out, because the run he had would have been even longer had he turned it upfield instead of running to the sidelines.  Expectations are now higher at UT.

The Bad:

  • While the effort was good all around, there were a couple of let downs.  The team was flat after halftime.  WKU was unable to take advantage.  Other teams will.

The Ugly:

  • Too many penalties, turnovers, and miscues, particularly in the 1st quarter.  Hopefully that was just first game jitters.  WKU wasn’t able to make the Vols pay.  Against Florida, those type of miscues will mean a big first half deficit.

So at least for one more week, UT fans get to keep their hopes for a big season alive.  Next up for the Vols is UCLA.  While UCLA is not expected to be that good this year, it will still be a step up in competition from WKU.  Hopefully UT can keep the momentum going from this week.
