So Much For Hope For The Vols

Blah! UCLA just gave the Vols and we the fans a huge reality check, defeating them in Knoxville 19-15. Obviously there is a huge difference between playing a first year FBS team and a Pac-10 team. And the things that looked great about the Vols last week were exposed by the Bruins as aberrations. Generally, our offense is just not very good. Let’s break it down.

The Good:

  • Hmm, what was good?….The crowd was loud?
  • OK, the defense was pretty solid.  Held the UCLA offense to around 3 yards per play.  Pretty much were the only reason UT was in the game at all.
  • Hardesty and Brown ran the ball hard.  Not very productive, but given the circumstances I think they were doing all they could do.

The Bad:

  • As good as Crompton looked last week, it now appears that had a lot more to do with WKU’s inferior defense than any real improvement on Crompton’s part.  He had 4 turnovers himself, and couldn’t even surpass the 100 yard mark in passing.  He was often either way off target or making baffling decisions with where he was going with the ball.  Unfortunately UT doesn’t seem to have anywhere else to turn at QB, as everyone got a shot at it last year and didn’t do any better.
  • The offensive line didn’t play particularly well.  They were getting whipped on a pretty regular basis, especially by Brian Price.  This is suppose to be a strength for this team, but it didn’t really look like it today.
  • As mentioned before, the turnovers.  You just can’t turn the ball over 4 times.  UT got away with it last week, but this time UCLA made them pay.  If fact, without those, UT may have been able to steal a victory even with the horrible play by the offense.

The Ugly:

  • Very likely next week’s game against Florida.  I was hoping that after this week that I would have some small reason to believe that we would have a chance.  Naturally a loss does just the opposite.  The Vols are going to be Tebowned next week, it’s just a matter of how ugly it is going to get.  (Would it be considered mean to hope that the whole Gator team gets the swine flu?)
